These are a two sided pyramid shape unlike a normal pyramid which has four sides.
The reason for a Wedge absorber is to give greater mass of absorbing material, in actual fact it gives about 20% more mass.
The functional advantage of these Wedge absorbers is that there is a 20% increase of performance and this is especially useful at lower frequencies where the wave is longer.
The best high frequency absorber is a pure 4 sided pyramid (normal pyramid) and the shape of the Wedge absorber means that the large sides (areas) of absorber stop the Wedge absorbers achieving very levels of performance (return loss) at high frequency where the wave is short.
Typically a full peak pyramid can achieve -50dB ~ -55dB at 5 x wavelength whereas the Wedge absorber is limited to -35dB to -40dB at the same frequencies
Typically Wedge absorber can be used to fulfil the requirements of MIL STD 461 to give good overall performance at 80MHz to >20GHz but is not suitable for , say an antenna test chamber where the maximum absorbing performance is required.
The installing of these absorbers is normally done in an alternate pattern, vertically and then horizontally in turn
