An unbiased data sheet

The codename ‘Tempest’

The codename ‘Tempest’ shielding relates to NATO secure communications, the sensitive nature means that the actual shielding levels are not common knowledge.

The codename ‘Tempest’ as in relation to military/governmental secure communications relates to radiated and conducted guaranteed shielding & insertion loss (for conducted signal) performance

To further complicate this situation there are different Tempest applications and different levels of minimum required attenuation for various applications

Given that the actual level of shielding is not disclosed then to offer a commercial product for this application only the highest performance is deemed to be good enough.

Achievable levels

Achievable levels of shielding are considered to be:

  • >-80dB @ 10KHz magnetic field
  • >-100dB @ 100KHz to 30MHz magnetic field
  • >-100dB from 1MHz to 1000MHz electric/far field
  • >-100dB from 1-40GHz microwave

Close attention to doors (twin knife), vents, capacitive filters, coax ports and wave guides will be required to achieve the above levels of guaranteed shielding performance.

The calibration and verification should be by a competent independent test body and should be done in a rigorous and uncompromising manner.
