Compact chambers for EMC

Compact chambers for EMC radiated emission & Immunity measurements are also known as ‘Pre-compliant’ EMC test chambers.

Compact EMC test chambers (as the name suggests) are much smaller than a compliant chambers and are less in cost.

The size is normally 7m long x 3.5m wide and 3m high but can slightly vary depending on the manufacturer and the available space to site the chamber.

The chamber comprises of a metallic shielded room (faraday cage) with a door, ventilation panels, power filter, coax cable ports and perhaps other facilities as required.

The function of the shielding is to screen the inside of the chamber from external electromagnetic interference (EMI) which would negate radiated measurement performance.

The internal aspects of the chamber are clad with radio wave/microwave absorber, this is to help prevent internal reflections which will impede measurement accuracy.

Anechoic lining types

There are two types of anechoic lining:

Performance

Both chamber types should be compliant to IEC/EN61000.4.3 for radiated immunity measurements.

Both chamber types will be Pre-compliant to the radiated emission measurements (ANSI C 63.4 and CISPR16) general measurement accuracy, the emissions measurement accuracy should be generally compliant but a few readings will be outside the allowed limits of accuracy for full compliance.
